How to put items on hold

There are two ways to put items on hold, though Encore and through Sierra.

How Patrons can request items with Encore (at home or in the library):

Log into your Minuteman Account with their library card number and password. If you do not yet have a password/pin or have forgotten it, you get a password or change your password using directions below the login. Staff can also reset patrons’ passwords in Sierra by clicking “edit” in their account.

Patrons can search for the item you want to put on hold in Encore. When they find the correct item, press “request” to the right of the item.

Choose which library you’d like to pick the item up at and click submit.

You can edit holds and do other actions such as renewing books, under your account. Just click your name.

How you can request books for patrons with Sierra:

Search for the patrons account using their card. In the patron’s account, go to the “holds” tab.

In the holds section, click “add hold”

Search for the item using title, author, record number, etc.

The record number is the last digits of the item’s link in encore, beginning with the “b.” The item below’s record number is b2474101

You can copy and paste the number into the search area in Sierra. Add an “a” after the record number to use it to search.  The record number will bring you to the same item you were looking at in Encore.

If you search for the item by title or author, select the specific item you would like by double clicking on it or clicking “select.”

For most items, you will select “hold copy returned soonest.” Use “hold selected item” if you want a specific copy of the item.

Ask patrons where they would like to pick the items up. Select “pickup location: and any other information needed on the hold options page, then click “ok.” For the question “Title paging options” – you will usually choose “page for title”

Now the item you held will appear in the patron’s account. If the patron has an e-mail on their account, they will get an automated e-mail when the item arrives.
